An important first consideration is the company behind the product. Kurt Kinetic is a thriving specialist division of Minneapolis based Kurt Manufacturing, which is devoted to the design, manufacture and distribution of the world’s highest quality cycling trainers.
Founded in 1947, the parent company quickly made a name for itself in precision manufacturing. In the 1950s the Kurt Vise became the industry standard for precision work holding equipment and over the next three decades Kurt expanded its reputation and expertise in precision engineering into many diverse industries. These included the zero tolerance worlds of aviation and aerospace, and today it is a growing $125 million company with hundreds of patents in almost as many industries.
A Review of the Kurt Kinetic Trainer
The Kinetic Road Machine Rear Wheel Trainer features a smooth quiet resistance from 5-3000 watts and 6.25 pound freewheel for realistic coast down. Features include a sealed fluid chamber with a magnetically-coupled driveshaft which is guaranteed not to leak. There is an unconditional lifetime warranty on the frame and the resistance unit. While fluid resistance trainers are quieter, smoother and more realistic than those which use magnetic, wind or rim driven resistance, their only drawback is that over time some have a tendency to leak fluid. The lifetime warranty on the Kurt Kinetic sealed fluid unit then is a very important factor in its favor. The Road Machine has been designed not to leak by doing away with driveshafts and seals that can wear over time. Instead, Kurt has used a sealed fluid chamber with a magnet coupler spinning an impeller inside the chamber. Using thermodynamic silicon, it provides consistent resistance at all temperatures, unlike others that heat up and lose viscosity and resistance. The 80 fins and intercooler help to keep things cool.
This trainer is one of the best. From the moment you start the easy set-up you know this is quality and not like all the others. Product dimensions are 23 x 21½ x 9 inches, with a weight of 31 pounds. It is built to be strong, and bike mounting on the trainer is straight and very simple while being totally secure, but the greatest feature is the quietness with which it operates. It provides a great workout, and you change resistance simply by changing gears on your bike. The Road Machine automatically adjusts the resistance as you increase your speed, so whether you’re just cruising along or doing tough intervals the resistance feels pretty true to what you’d experience on the road. The trainer is compatible with all bikes with 16″ to 29″ diameter wheels, though an optional small wheel adapter is required for 16″ to 22″ wheels.

The Negatives
While it really is quiet, and will get a little louder at the higher speeds, which is to be expected, it’s not nearly as bad as most other fluid trainers, and definitely is quieter as compared with most other types of trainers.
The wide stance of the Kurt frame takes up more space but does make it very sturdy and prevents rocking.
The mitering and welds where the bike attachment assembly joins the main frame has some visible gaps, and rough metal, but I’m certain that does not affect product durability, and there is the lifetime warranty.
Summary
I liked the simple operation of the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine Indoor Trainer and the lifetime warranty. The Kurt Kinetic is definitely an improvement in the power curve department, where it is progressive and feels realistic. Resistance is more than adequate to provide high-power interval training, and the heavy flywheel also helps with a good road feel. The attachment mechanism is simple and works well.
It’s easy to see why it has been tested and rated the best by the Cycling press and loved by riders. It’s no wonder the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine Indoor Trainer is the official bicycle trainer for the USA Cycling Team, and a recommended buy.
